There's actually a story behind this odd pairing. When seeking to find low-cost, hearty, school lunch meals that kids would actually eat, this was the magic combination that stuck. 

When the kids grew up, this meal felt nostalgic, making it a common Wichita comfort food today. Some dip the roll in the chili, some eat it as dinner and dessert, but either way, it's affordable, filling, and delicious! 

Bierock 

If you're from the Midwest and have never heard of this, you might call it Runzas. If you're not familiar, they're basically homemade German Hot Pockets filled with seasoned ground beef, onion, and cabbage or sauerkraut. German immigrants brought them to the region decades ago, and they were so good that they became part of the permanent Wichita culture. They're also a great grab-and-go food if you're in a hurry to get somewhere and can't sit down for a meal.

This one sounds weirder than it is. If you order chicken noodle soup at most places, they'll serve it to you in a bowl. In Wichita, we believe that comfort food should be familiar and hearty. Down-Home Chicken Fried Steak 

Chicken-fried steak is a Wichita staple. This dish consists of a steak breaded and fried like chicken. It comes with the most amazing white gravy you'll ever eat! If you have the opportunity to try it, don't pass it up.
